"Tilt" the end

"Tilt" is in place at the Rockville Civic Center

The opening went well, and the show is one of the best they have had.

"Tilt" is Off to the Show

The chrome film goes on.

Shine on.

Trimming and trimming.

It's off to the show. The guys at Performance Auto Body really did a great job with the paint. Thanks.

It has been raining for the last couple of days. Tomorrow is suppose to be sunny and dry. A better forecast for the install.

That's a whole lot of Yellow

A day at the paint shop makes a world of difference.

Back side ready for mirror. Tomorrow it is off to the sign shop for a chrome film. I had been planning on using stainless steel, but that didn't work out as I had hoped.

I had been looking at this mirror film the sign companies use thinking that it would be a good alternative to metal. I'm going to try it and see what happens.

Going Yellow

Took "Tilt" From the trailer to the paint booth.

With any luck wednesday it will be very YELLOW.

More "Tilt"

The final step before the color goes on is wet sanding the piece with 400 sandpaper.

Once again it is a case of sand it, flip it, sand it again. I masked off the area that was already done; it's easier to mask than it is to sand off over spray.

The sanding is done!

I decided to have a body shop that does really nice work paint "Tilt." I didn't think I could get the result I wanted painting in the drive way.

"Tilt" is loaded up and tomorrow it is off to the paint shop. It is getting close to finished, which is good as the show opening is a week from today.

Tilt — Lots of work, boring pictures.

"Tilt" is going to be in the 2009 Sculpture on the Grounds Show at the Rockville MD Civic Center. The opening is June 7th.

The painting process is going on. Blocking and priming, sanding with finer sand paper. The end result will be a finish sanding with 400 [very fine] sand paper.

Lots of work, boring pictures.

Tilt — The painting begins

The painting begins. First coat of primer.

One color. It is beginning to take shape. This will get sanded at least once more.

Still have one more side to fill and get straight.

First coat of primer sanded and ready for another coat. The color is next.

"Tilt" is getting straight

First coat of body filler.

Sand it down, second coat of body filler. Sand it down check it out and hopefully primer tomorrow.

Tilt — Ready for painting

Took a break from flipping, sanding and glass to go to British and European Classic Motorcycle Day. Motorcycles are Good.

Back at it again. The last piece of cloth. Trim it sand it — done with cloth.

Time to go over the whole thing looking for any imperfections and touch them up.

Inspections.

Flip it, more sanding.

Ready for painting. Sand the whole thing down, fill any low spots, and begin blocking and priming.

"Tilt" is getting heavy

We got it flipped over this morning. "Tilt" is getting heavy.

The cloth I'm using is 50" wide; another set of hands are a good thing. Buzz is really good at just about everything.

Getting the cloth on and no wrinkles takes some time.

A gallon of resin and an hour later the first layer is done. It will set up in a couple of hours and we will do it all over again.

After the second layer it will be time to start sanding and priming for paint.

TILT — Fiberglass

The fiberglass has been going on for a couple of days. Each side has 2 layers of cloth.

The process has been glass it, flip it, glass it and flip it again.

Needless to say Buzz has been back.

After this last upright edge is done the piece is going to flipped for the last time. I'm hoping that will be tomorrow.

The next step is prep for paint.

More Tilt

Fiberglass starts out as cloth. Spread it out over the piece, cut it to size, mix up the resin and "wet it out."

After it sets up it looks like this.

Flip the piece over and do it all over again.

TILT — Next step

Once the frame is complete it gets covered with plywood. I try to get as much done as possible before it gets assembled. Its easier to deal with in smaller parts.

"Tilt" is another piece that is too large to set up in my shop.

This is Buzz. He comes by and lends a hand when I have built some thing bigger than I can handle by myself. He is holding "Tilt" up with one finger and a little weight in the front. If the piece was perfectly balanced it most likely not be named "Tilt."

Once "Tilt" is assembled it's back inside for the rest of the plywood.

After the plywood is on it's time to prep for the fiberglass. Sanding the piece, filling all the screws heads and edges.

This part of the project goes on for ever, Flip it over and sand it, fill it, sand it, repeat.

Next the fiberglass goes on.

TILT

This is "TILT" or a maquette of "TILT" and just for fun I thought I would put the project on the web site.

"TILT" is going to be another fiberglass and Stainless Steel piece.

Model front

Model back

Step one, build a frame.

This photo is the beginning of the frame being covered with plywood. Tonight I hope to finish the plywood. Prep for fiberglass is next.
