07/21/2009 "Zig Zag Boogie Woogie" Installation complete
Bonus: The National Motorcycle Museum in Iowa.
07/20/2009 "Zig Zag Boogie Woogie" install at Art on the River show, Dubuque, IowaWith the placement of the pieces set it was time to drive the stakes.
3 stakes in each piece. That never seems like a big deal until the 14th stake. The hammer gets really heavy.
07/19/2009 Moving "Zig Zag Boogie Woogie"I just got back from a road trip. I had to pick up "Zig Zag Boogie Woogie" from Washburn University where it was one of the pieces in their annual out door sculpture show, and move it to the Art on the River show in Dubuque, Iowa. This is "Zig Zag Boogie Woogie" looking good after a year in Topeka, Kansas. My plan was to photograph the deinstall, but it went so smoothly we had it out in no time and forgot to take the pictures. An old college friend was good enough to come along and help. Made it like old times.
After we got it out, cleaned up at a car wash, once again the camera was forgotten. We headed for Des Moines, Iowa.
To see a friend and check out the art scene there. We stopped by the new, not yet opened sculpture park, the Carruso Umbrella, and the Des Moines Art Center where Tara Donovan's installations are presently. Des Moines is very Cool. After an over night stay in Le Claire, Iowa along the banks of the Mississippi River it was on to Dubuque for the install. This is the site and the beginning of the process..
Getting the lines parallel,
and the spacing even takes the most time.
Each piece gets easier and "Zig Zag Boogie Woogie" begins to come to life. See the red line painted on the ground in the picture above? That's a buried sprinkler line, and the city would rather we didn't puncture it. They had it marked and ready for us. The people of Art on the River are really great. They made the whole experience great.
